Real Life Horror: The Moray Eel

Moray eels look like this:

“Creepy Moray Eel” by Michael Bentley

There’s something about them that makes me uneasy. They’re so…thick. Substantial. Meaty. Imagine scuba diving and looking down and seeing that big green monster right below you.

But that’s not the half of it.

From the front, they look like this:

both images from Gamestop.com

The “eyes” of the humanoid face you’re seeing are actually its nostrils, but that doesn’t make it any less creepy. Also? The green moray eel, pictured here, has two full sets of  jaws. Due to their bite mechanism,  “…the eel cannot release its grip even in death and must be manually pried off.”

See it in action below, and ask yourself why you ever thought it was a good idea to go into the ocean.

  • Hey, the eel in the 2nd picture – it is obviously different from the other moray eels pictured here. Is it a subspecies or is it injured in some way? What is the cause of the difference in appearance? Thank you.

    • Good question, Jay.

Unfortunately I don’t have the answer. These photos were sourced from Gamestop.com, and had been posted out of context, more for the “scare” than education.

When I looked again just now, it does appear that the eel(s) in the pair of pictures may be older or injured, but to be honest I’m not sure.

  • Im pretty sure that the photos provided that show a bizarre looking Eel are neither a subspecies, or just the nostrils of an Eel.
Im relatively certain that the one shown was either mutilated, hence its bizarre face, or was born with a really weird birth defect.
Either way it is more based on factors of where it lived, and how it was born – rather then some undiscovered subspecies.

Its a shame as its such a bizarre and neiche horror, that human esc Eel, yet there are only two photos, and no one seems to know as of where it was found…
